Many patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) are not provided evidence-based counseling and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as part of their treatment experience because MAT is a technology that has not been adopted by many typical treatment agencies. Counseling programs are pressed for training resources and time to engage in counselor training. Medicine for patients with AUD is being offered more regularly as programs adopt medication solutions for patients with opioid use disorder; however, many counselors do not have a lot of information about MAT for AUD and in fact are often unaware that medication can enhance outcomes. Similarly, patients are unaware of their treatment options for using medication to assist in their recovery. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) was designed to examine the development and use of a 4-volume graphic novel series designed to assist counselors and patients to engage in a shared decision-making approach regarding the use of medication to address AUD.
