Recently bereaved individuals face higher risks of adverse health outcomes, including increased risk of morbidity and mortality, increased risk of suicide, and lower functional status and quality of life. This systematic review assessed the available evidence on screening, diagnosing, and treating children and adults at risk for or diagnosed with grief disorders related to bereavement. Findings from this review informed a 2-day independent subject matter advisory panel convened on June 10, 2024, by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) that assessed the feasibility of developing consensus-based quality standards for high quality bereavement and grief care.
