This longitudinal randomized comparative effectiveness trial compared 2 interventions to improve the safety of patients experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV): (1) care as usual (CAU), with a hospital-based social worker in a medical-legal partnership; or (2) an intervention grounded in self-determination theory, called personalized support for progress (PSP), delivered by a community health worker (CHW). IPV is an international public health problem that results in increased morbidity and mortality. Health care settings provide an opportunity for early intervention, including IPV screening, assessments, and referrals.
