Nondaily smokers (NDS) who smoke on some but not all days are a growing subset of US tobacco users. Racial/ethnic minorities are more likely to be NDS than non-Hispanic White people. African American NDS have strikingly high levels of nicotine and carcinogen exposure even after adjustment for variations in smoking levels and nicotine metabolism. No smoking cessation clinical trials or observational comparative effectiveness research studies have been undertaken with African American NDS, making treatment with a focus on complete abstinence a priority in this high-risk group.
