Patients with advanced cancer often have a poor understanding of the incurability of their disease, and this correlates to higher rates of aggressive treatment near end of life. Goals-of-care (GoC) discussions may affect patients’ decisions about aggressive treatment near end of life and should include talking about patients’ values. We randomly assigned oncologists to a coaching intervention to improve their communication skills and assessed its impact on prevalence and quality of GoC discussions and, secondarily, on aggressive care in the last month of life.
