Acute noncancer pain is a common presenting symptom of primary care patients and can result in prescription of opioid analgesics, with the potential for unsafe use and progression to chronic opioid therapy. Because of these dangers and the high prevalence and societal costs of acute noncancer pain, it is imperative that health care professionals and systems offer effective treatment options that reduce symptoms, improve function, facilitate return to activities, and prevent potential unsafe use of opioid analgesics.
